How to update Kodi on Android TV -

This tutorial will show you how to update Kodi on Android TV Box. This guide will also work for any Android smartphone or tablet. There are multiple ways to update Kodi on an Android TV device – In this guide, I will show you both methods. The first method will be via Google Play store, the second method will show you how to update Kodi via the official Kodi website.

There are pro’s and con’s for using each method. If you update Kodi on your Android TV box via Google play store, it is likely that you will automatically receive any future updates without having to manually install it. Whilst this has the benefits of ‘keeping up to date’, it also means that when an update is installed, it is common for the user to loose any data currently setup within Kodi (normally a custom build, addons, or theme). This may not always be the case, but it is common when you update Kodi from one version to another (for example, from Kodi 17.6 to 18 Leia).

If you are currently running Kodi which which was downloaded and installed directly from Kodi Official – you will be able to update to a higher version without uninstalling the current version. Kodi official sign their apps, so if your current version of Kodi was installed from a third party, you may need to uninstall your current version first.

At the time of writing this tutorial, the current official release for Kodi is version 17.6 Krypton. Kodi version 18.0 Leia is currently available, but is still in a release candidate state (RC) – at the time of writing this post, which means it is likely to contain bugs.

We recommend to always update to official releases.
